AC Blowing Warm Air?
Before you book a repair, a few safe checks take five minutes and sometimes fix it. If they don't, you'll know what to tell the technician.
The Short Answer.
When an AC runs but blows warm air, check the thermostat setting, the air filter, the breakers, and the outdoor unit first. A dirty filter can raise energy costs and damage the equipment, and dirty coils reduce the system's ability to cool. If the lines are iced, the breaker trips again, or water is leaking, turn the system off and call: servicing that equipment requires an EPA-certified technician.

Check These First.
The thermostat
Make sure it's set to Cool, the fan is on Auto, and the temperature is set below the room's. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries.
The air filter
Pull it out and look. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment; ENERGY STAR suggests checking it once a month.
The breakers
The outdoor unit and the indoor unit usually each have a breaker. If one is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
The outdoor unit
With the system on, the outdoor fan should spin. Clear leaves and plants away from it. Dirty coils reduce the system's ability to cool, but coil cleaning is a job for a technician.
Ice on the lines or the indoor coil
Turn the system off and let the ice melt. Ice usually points to an airflow or refrigerant problem, which needs a technician.
Water around the indoor unit
A plugged condensate drain can cause water damage in the house. Turn the system off and call before the ceiling or floor takes the hit.
When to Stop and Call.
Don't add refrigerant yourself
Federal rules require the technicians who service AC equipment to be EPA-certified. Low refrigerant also means a leak, and topping it up doesn't fix the leak.
Someone at home is at risk from heat
A hot house is dangerous for older adults, young children, and people with health conditions. Don't wait it out. Our emergency line is answered 24/7.
Burning smell, buzzing, or a breaker that trips again
Turn the system off at the thermostat and leave it off until a technician has looked at it.
